    Some of our newer vets spent an excellent CPD day at Dalehead in Settle with vets Andrew, Karen and Ian. The theory session covered all elements of controlling the breeding season in sheep, which was followed by a practical session vasectomising several tups that belong to Andrew. All attendees rated the day highly and apparently lunch was exceptional!

  • "School Trip" to the SRUC Dumfries

    All of our practices send off samples to "the lab" and speak to "the lab" so it was great to actually have a visit there and meet the team behind the scenes. Colin Mason arranged a PM room session and a lab session to look at latest trends in parasitology and abortion sampling.  The day was rounded of with a curry in Dumfries, courtesy of Claire from MSD.

    Neighbouring practices Dalehead Veterinary Group and Farm Gate Vets teamed up for a joint farmer meeting on lungworm and general cattle worm control to ultilise the expertise of Colin Mason from the SRUC Dumfries. Cattle wormer resistance is a train coming down the track and we must act now was the main message.  Reliance on relatively cheap pour on wormers has become widespread and we need to re think our approach through tools such as faecal testing and vaccination for lungworm. Beef roll and chips were enjoyed by all at Bentham Golf Club.

    Making good use of Iain McCormick and Rob Smith from Zoetis, we organised a trip for them which started with an evening debate at Shap Wells hotel, for new grads, old grads and all those in between. The topic being "Which antibiotic"?  The following morning started on farm with training for vets and vet techs on teat sealing and taking milk samples.

    In January we held a series of client meetings and a vet CPD night which were hosted by Boehringer Ingelheim with their Poultry Specialist Jen Lock and Cattle Vet Kath Aplin. The poultry industry has dramatically reduced antibiotic use through strict hygiene and biosecurity protocols. The same principles can be applied to calf sheds. At the vet CPD we went into more detail on appropriate uses for disinfectants and detergents.

    This was a completely different topic for us but considering our high density of sheep clients, it was really good to understand more about this sector, which accounts for over 70% of the British Lamb Market. Dr Awal Fuseini from AHDB talked about how the vast majority of UK Halal slaughter is now stunned and how in the future there is potential for export.  Alex Ashworth from MSD spoke about sheep lameness and the Happy Feet Happy Sheep Campaign.

    Farm Vet Network were pleased to host a QMMS Taurus Mastitis CPD event – Getting Started with Mastitis control at our Farm Gate Kendal Practice, where we were joined by tutor Al Manning. 16 vets attended from a mixture of member and non member practices.
